Guitars are a musical instrument that can be used in many different types of musical styles. A normal guitar would have six strings but some of them can have four, seven, eight, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen and even up to eighteen strings on them. There are three types of guitars which are electric, classical and acoustics, (but the last two of normally put in the same category).
Guitars are primarily used in all different types of genres from jazz, blues, and country. To different forms of pop and rock.

The one major feature of an acoustic guitar is that the sound is made by the strings vibrating onto the hollow body and echoing the sound outwards. It does not rely on any type of amplification to get its sound out, where as an electric does. Most acoustics are used in slow ballad type songs where they can be heard rather than a fast tempo, upbeat song where the other instruments wash it out.

Most electric guitars have a solid body that produces little sound by itself, so in order to get the full sound it is hooked up to some form of amplification. The guitars body has things called electromagnetic pickups that convert the vibration of the steel strings into electrical signals, which are fed to an amplifier through a cable. The electric guitar is used a lot in jazz, blues, and rock and roll music. The electric guitar was commercialized by Gibson along with Les Paul, and was independently commercialized by Leo Fender of Fender Music.
